Northwest Territories of Canada features an iconic polar bear-shaped license plates which were introduced in 1970 to celebrate the territory's centennial. These plates are not only functional but also cherished by residents and collectors, symbolizing the region's wildlife and heritage.
These polar bear plates were designed by NWT Commissioner Stuart Hodgson. Original design featured a blue background with white numbering. First plate which was issued was number '1'.
It complies with all legal standards while maintaining its polar bear form . The Current design was rolled out on July 1, 2010, featuring a nature scene and the slogan "Spectacular Northwest Territories."
These Plates are made of aluminum, incorporating graphic sheeting technology for better visibility at night. This design is a registered trademark of the Government of the Northwest Territories, emphasizing its importance to local identity. These plates are not only used on vehicles but are also found in cafes, homes, and private collections worldwide
In 1984, a mini version of the polar bear plate was introduced for motorcycles, measuring 4 inches by 7 inches. We can say a miniature form of that number plate. This change came after a petition from motorcyclists in the NWT
When Nunavut was established in 1999, a dispute arose over the polar bear design, as the NWT had created it but much of the polar bear's territory was now in Nunavut. Nunavut initially adopted a similar design but then switched to a rectangular plate in 2012.
